Will Marvin Egho Follow In The Footsteps Of Alaba And Play For Austria Rather Than Nigeria?
Published: July 10, 2016
SV Ried new acquisition Marvin Egho could follow in the footsteps of Bayern Munich star David Alaba and Beijing BG striker Rubin Okotie by playing competitively for Austria rather than Nigeria.
Before committing his international future to Austria, Alaba was qualified to represent the national teams of Nigeria and Philippines as well, and previously stated that he was never approached by the Nigeria Football Federation to play for the country.
It was a no-brainer that Okotie, who had been eligible for Nigeria and Pakistan, will make his senior debut for Austria having starred for their youth team in Canada during the 2007 Fifa Under 20 World Cup.
A third player of Nigerian descent, Mainz 05 striker Karim Onisiwo, narrowly missed out on making Austria’s squad for the 2016 European Championship, having made his debut against Switzerland in a friendly last November.
Touted as one of the top talents in Austria in his teenage years, the 22-year-old Marvin Egho has represented the U21 national team of Austria three times.
The Vienna-born striker spent his formative years as a footballer at SC Wiener Neustadt, then had spells with SR Donaufeld Wien, SK Rapid Wien, Admira Wacker and SC Wiener Neustadt before his recent move to SV Ried.
