Nigeria in suspense over thigh injury suffered by Bordeaux's Kalu before AFCONQ vs Benin
Published: March 14, 2021Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu has emerged as an injury doubt for Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho later this month.
Kalu had to make way for Nicolas de Préville sixteen minutes into Sunday's 3-1 win at Dijon FCO due to injury.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Bordeaux manager Jean-Louis Gasset confirmed that Kalu was replaced because he had a problem behind his thigh.
The former KAA Gent star will undergo medical examinations on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
The medical test will decide whether or not Kalu will be available for selection for Bordeaux's Ligue 1 tie against Montpellier next Sunday, March 21 and the Super Eagles upcoming matches.
The 23-year-old was not in the Super Eagles squad for their last three matches - against Tunisia and Sierra Leone home and way - as a result of fitness issues.
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr is already without his first choice right-back, Hoffenheim's Kevin Akpoguma, who is lacking match fitness after recovering from a hamstring issue that kept him on the sidelines for several weeks.
