UCL wrap : Sanusi strikes, Onyedika rises to the occasion, Bassey's Ajax suffer record loss, Nusa subbed in
Published: October 04, 2022Nigerian football stars were in action for their respective clubs in matchday three of the UEFA Champions League.
It was a night of mixed fortunes for Nigeria-eligible footballers, while some had victorious outings another endured a loss.
Starting off in Group B. Zaidu Sanusi was on target for FC Porto in their 2-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the Estadio do Dragao.
He was brought on in the 63rd minute as a replacement for the injured Wendell. The Super Eagles left-back would go on to open the scoring six minutes later with a powerful header after Taremi whipped in a cross.
Still in Group B, Raphael Onyedika and Antonio Nusa both featured in Club Brugge's unexpected 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Jan Breydel stadium.
The impressive Onyedika, who played the entire duration of the game, was yellow carded in first half stoppage time for pulling back Antoine Griezmann.
Ferran Jutglà doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute after he set up the opener netted by Kamal Sowah as the Belgian champions made it three wins out of three.
Nusa, the youngest player to score on his Champions League debut, played the last four minutes for Club Brugge.
Moving to Group A, Nigeria international Calvin Bassey and his Ajax teammates suffered a humiliating 6-1 loss to Napoli - their heaviest ever defeat in the Champions League.
Despite the absence of Victor Osimhen, Luciano Spalletti's men still found a way to thump the Dutch giants.
Ghana striker Mohammed Kudus opened the scoring in the ninth minute but the game changed as Giacomo Raspadori nodded in an equaliser before strikes from Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Piotr Zieliński, Raspadori's second and Giovanni Simeone.
