Weghorst's imminent move : Man Utd set to continue policy that benefited Odion Ighalo
Published: January 12, 2023Manchester United are set to conclude the loan signing of Burnley-owned striker, Wout Weghorst, until the end of the season.
Weghorst is currently on loan at Turkish Lig 1 side, Besiktas FC, but United are keen to have him as it would not run foul of FIFA’s rule.
The United hierarchy are looking at securing a replacement for the departed Cristiano Ronaldo who left in acrimonious circumstances after a controversial interview.
According to transfer market guru, Fabrizio Romano. the transfer fee that United are set to pay for Weghorst is €3m with the Burnley striker set to fly into Manchester on Thursday to undergo his mandatory medical examinations before signing on the dotted line.
The 30-year-old striker's move is similar to that of Nigerian striker, Jude Odion Ighalo who signed for the Red Devils at an identical age in January 2020.
Ighalo went on to score some memorable goals for United, particularly in the UEFA Europa League.
That deal continued United's growing interest for strikers in their 30s.
Prior to Ighalo joining his boyhood club, Manchester United had signed veterans like Robin van Persie, Henrik Larsson, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
United even tried to get for themselves former West Ham forward, Marko Arnautović from Serie A side, Bologna last year.
That move was rebuffed by the United fanbase who protested against the plans.
Former Watford star, Ighalo cherished his time at Manchester United but it could be that the policy might change in future with reports linking the club with an interest for Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen.
However, should the Glazers not sell the club as anticipated, it is likely that this policy of getting strikers in their 30s and in the twilight of their careers might continue.
