Atletico Madrid join Liverpool in race to sign N16b-rated Danish-Nigerian defender
Published: October 20, 2023Atletico Madrid have reportedly joined Liverpool in the race for the signature of talented Denmark U21 international of Nigerian descent, Patrick Dorgu.
Liverpool were previously linked with the Lecce defender who is on the radar of Denmark's coach Kasper Hjulmand with a view to a call up to the senior national team.
According to Italian transfer market website Calciomercato, scouts representing Atletico Madrid were in attendance at Fotbalový stadion Střelecký ostrov on Tuesday to run the rule over Dorgu during Denmark's goalless draw with Czech Republic in a European U21 qualifier.
Dorgu was impressive in 67 minutes of action before making way for Aske Adelgaard.
It is claimed that Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on the Danish-Nigerian left-back ahead of the January transfer window.
Lecce have set an asking price of 20 million euros (approximately N16 billion in Nigerian currency) for Dorgu - 100 times the fee they originally paid for him when he was acquired from FC Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2022.
After helping Lecce win the Primavera in his first season in Italy, he was promoted to the first team on a permanent basis for the 2023-2024 campaign and has been involved in every single game played by the Giallorossi this term - nine in total.
The 18-year-old has a contract with Lecce until the summer of 2027.
