AC Omonia planning to sign new goalkeeper if Uzoho is named in Super Eagles' 2023 AFCON squad
Published: December 14, 2023Cypriot First Division club AC Omonia are reportedly planning to sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window if Francis Uzoho is named in Nigeria's squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to Goal Philinews, the selection or not of Francis Uzoho in the Nigeria National squad for the Africa Cup of Nations will determine Omonia 's next steps in the transfer market.
If Uzoho is nominated for the Africa Cup of Nations, Omonia Nicosia will proceed to acquire a new goalkeeper.
AC Omonia are also considering recalling Cyprus international Constantinos Panagi from his loan spell if an agreement can be reached with Ethnikos Achna.
Everything is pointing to the fact that Uzoho will be selected for the tournament in Ivory Coast but whether he retains his place as first choice goalkeeper is a different matter, having failed to impress in his last four appearances for the national team.
Uzoho's form nosedived due to a lack of first team football at Omonia, with Brazilian star Fabiano ahead of him in the pecking order of goalkeepers.
Fabiano's injury opened the door for the Nigeria international to make his first league start in 204 days for Omonia in a 2-0 win over Nea Salamis Famagusta FC on gameweek 14 of the Cypriot First Division.
Uzoho rose to the occasion with a string of brilliant saves to prevent the opponents from scoring and was named Most Valuable Player.
