'We need him to perform' - Ex-Nottingham Forest defender urges Awoniyi to start scoring goals consistently
Published: March 12, 2024
Former Nottingham Forest defender Kelvin Wilson has expressed his frustration with the form and fitness of Super Eagles central forward Taiwo Awoniyi.
Awoniyi has been injured for a sizable part of the season, missing eleven Premier League games due to injury, which has had a huge influence on Forest's campaign.
Due to his struggles, Nuno Espirito has had to manage his game time, having started just one of the last three games for the City Ground outfit.
Unsurprisingly, his lack of fitness has also affected his goal return as he has notched just six league goals so far, the second-highest for the two-time European champions.
Speaking to Forest Focus podcast via Nottingham Forest News, Wilson expressed his frustration with the Nigeria international, stating how much Nottingham Forest need him to be at his best.
"Have we got time to be patient? Time is running out but we need him to start firing now. I know he's been injured but the pressure is on and we need him to perform."
"Ideally, we'd be mid-table and we could keep bringing him on for the last 20 minutes to get his fitness up. We don't have the luxury to give him time, we need him to be scoring goals."
Nottingham Forest stand the risk of getting relegated to the Championship, as they sit just three points outside the relegation zone at the moment.
They will need Awoniyi to repeat what he did last season when helped them keep their Premier League status, scoring six goals and assisting once in the last four games.
