'The way we are treated has changed'- Super Falcons star Alozie backtracks after criticising NFF

Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie has expressed her enthusiasm ahead of Nigeria’s double-header international friendly matches against arch-rivals Cameroon, while also backtracking on past criticism of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the team’s treatment.

Earlier this month, Alozie recounted her initial experience with the Super Falcons, expressing shock at being expected to hand wash her training gear and questioning the disparity, noting that the Super Eagles are not subjected to such conditions.

Speaking from the team’s camp in Ogun State, where preparations have begun in earnest for the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Alozie told the NFF's official website, "I am excited for the upcoming training camp and to be back with the Super Falcons; it’s my first time in Ogun State! Everyone is looking forward to the Women AFCON and that is our main focus."

In a notable shift from her past public frustrations over the welfare of players, the Houston Dash star added, "The way we are treated has changed in the past few years, for the better, especially with our continued success over the years.

"I am happy to see the steady change as women’s sports across the world continue to achieve and fight for more equality."

Alozie was a key figure in Nigeria’s campaign at the last WAFCON held in Morocco in 2022 and was also part of the squad that reached the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup without losing a match in regulation time.

Alongside Alozie, early arrivals to the team’s Ijebu-Ode camp include captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Omorinsola Babajide of Spain, and PSG midfielder Jennifer Echegini.

Also expected on Monday are midfielders Toni Payne, Deborah Abiodun, and Ifeoma Onumonu; defenders Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin, Rofiat Imuran, Shukurat Oladipo, Sikiratu Isah, and Blessing Ilivieda; goalkeepers Linda Jiwuaku and Morufa Ademola; midfielders Amarachi Odoma and Josephine Mathias; and forwards Francisca Ordega and Olamide Bolaji.

Former junior international Miracle Usani and striker Emem Essien will also report to camp on Monday.

First-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie is expected to arrive on Tuesday, while Portugal-based midfielder Christy Ucheibe will join on Wednesday.

Training sessions will take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, where the Super Falcons will face Cameroon on Saturday, 31st May.

The second encounter is scheduled for the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta on Tuesday, 3rd June.
