Arokodare scores two minutes after coming on, denied winner by woodwork in Ajax draw v Excelsior

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive scoring form for Ajax in their 2-2 draw against Excelsior at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Saturday evening.

Arokodare, who joined the Eredivisie giants on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers during the summer, made an immediate impact after coming on as a second-half substitute.

The Nigerian international was introduced in the 62nd minute, replacing Kasper Dolberg, and found the back of the net just two minutes later.

Dolberg had earlier assisted Julian Brandt for Ajax’s opening goal in the first half.

Arokodare found the back of the net shortly after his introduction to level the score at 2-2 for Ajax.

The Super Eagles striker showed good positioning to meet Oscar Gloukh’s cross and calmly finish.

The Nigerian forward remained a constant threat to the Excelsior defence and came close to completing his brace on several occasions.

In the 75th minute, he rose highest to meet Julian Brandt’s corner, but his header was cleared off the line by Excelsior striker David Garden.

Arokodare came close to scoring the winning goal three minutes before full-time when his header struck the woodwork, leaving Ajax to settle for a share of the points.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker came close to adding another goal deep into stoppage time, but his close-range volley sailed over the crossbar.

Arokodare’s impressive scoring run has taken his tally to six goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions since joining the Eredivisie giants.

The Nigerian striker will now look to carry his momentum into the Super Eagles camp as Nigeria prepare to face Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau in their upcoming AFCON qualifying fixtures.
