The Super Falcons of Nigeria revived their 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday, bouncing back from their disappointing opening defeat to Malawi.
The 10-time African champions made the perfect start as veteran forward Asisat Oshoala scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute to hand Nigeria an early lead.
Nigeria's task became significantly more difficult in the 40th minute when defender Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off after the referee showed her a straight red card for a foul on Zambia captain Barbra Banda.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 players, the Super Falcons produced a disciplined defensive display to withstand Zambia's relentless attacks.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and Nigeria's resolute defence stood firm to preserve the narrow advantage and secure a vital three points.
The victory was a timely response from Justine Madugu's side after their opening defeat and reignited Nigeria's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
The Super Falcons will now shift their focus to their final Group C match against Egypt on Wednesday, August 5, where another positive result could secure qualification for the knockout stage as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11th Wafcon title.
