Nigeria’s Flamingos opened their 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Niger Republic 5-0 in their opening fixture.
Captain Chidi Harmony put Nigeria ahead in the 16th minute, giving the Flamingos an early advantage as they controlled the contest from the opening stages.
Nigeria continued to apply pressure and doubled their lead in the 35th minute through Awawu Bashiru.
The Flamingos remained dangerous in attack and appeared to have added another goal before the interval, but the effort was ruled out for offside in the 42nd minute.
Nigeria therefore went into half-time with a 2-0 advantage. The Flamingos maintained their dominance after the restart and continued to search for more goals.
Their persistence eventually paid off late in the match as Nigeria produced a strong finish.
Mary Dunstan made it 4-0 in the 84th minute, just one minute after Nigeria had scored their third goal through Ohunene Sunday, giving the Flamingos a commanding advantage.
The momentum continued into stoppage time, with Ayomide Rotimi adding Nigeria’s fifth goal in the 94th minute to complete a comprehensive victory.
The final whistle confirmed a 5-0 triumph for the Flamingos, giving them an ideal start to their campaign in the regional competition.
Nigeria’s commanding victory will provide the team with confidence ahead of their next fixture as they continue their quest for success at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup.
The Flamingos will next face Ghana in their second group-stage match on Saturday, September 19, with Nigeria looking to build on their impressive opening-day performance.
