Stanley Awurum Is My Secret Weapon - Varzim Coach
Published: August 24, 2015
Varzim of Portugal coach Quim Berto has revealed that young Nigerian striker Stanley Ejike Awurum is his secret weapon.
Awurum came off the bench to net his second goal of the season with just three minutes to full time as the newly-promoted side ran away with a lone goal victory over Leixões on Saturday.
Awurum, top scorer in the Mozambican second division few seasons ago, had previously rammed into in his side’s equalizer after coming off the bench, leaving Berto fullfilled with his secret weapon tag.
The Port Harcourt-born former Academy player told allnigeriasoccer.com that he was happy to score after coming off the bench, saying he’s done well to repay Berto’s faith in him.
“ We have a striker who was their top scorer last season but has netted once so far this season that still gets the starting nod,” he said
“ He’s quite good and the coach prefers to start him and have me on when the going gets tough on the pitch
“ I’ve really lived up to expectation and I dedicate all the goals to God for making it possible for me to get this far.
“ I’ve scored two goals in three games all as a sub and I thank God for it.”
Awurum joined the ambitious club late last season as they navigated their ship up to the Segunda (second division), winning the Third Division championship.
His goals, 25, mostly from against the run of play, propelled Chibuto to finish second on the the Mozambican second division log as well as becoming theb losing finalists in the FA Cup in the 2013/14 season.
