Besiktas coach opens up: Why Super Eagles midfielder Ndidi was named vice-captain
Published: October 20, 2025
Besiktas manager Sergen Yalçın has explained his decision to appoint Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as vice-captain.
Yalçın confirmed that Turkish midfielder Orkun Kökçü will serve as the team's first captain, while Ndidi has been chosen as the second.
According to the Besiktas boss, the choice was made after considering leadership balance and on-field dynamics.
"Necip and Mert are already the oldest in the team," Yalçın revealed as reported by fotomac.
"Having a goalkeeper as captain is a bit problematic. Mert is a goalkeeper, and he gets booked when he goes out of bounds. We decided to develop a captain from within."
Ndidi joined the Turkish giants in the summer following Leicester City's relegation to the Championship.
Since his arrival, the Nigerian international has impressed with his tireless work rate, defensive awareness, and ability to dictate play in midfield.
So far, he has featured for 480 minutes in the Turkish top flight, averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, and 2.8 clearances per game.
Having previously worn the captain's armband with the Super Eagles and during his time at Leicester City, Ndidi is no stranger to leadership responsibilities.
As the season unfolds, Yalçın will be counting on the midfielder’s experience and composure to inspire the team both on and off the pitch.
