Barkley,Alli Feature As Three Lions Are Tamed By Holland
Published: March 29, 2016
Two players of Nigerian descent, Ross Barkley and Dele Alli, were in action on Tuesday night as the Three Lions were tamed by the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium, suffering their first loss at home since 2013.
England went into the tie full of confidence after coming from behind to beat Germany 3-2 in Munich last weekend but they were proved wrong with the visitors scoring twice in the second half through Janssen and Narsingh to secure a 2-1 win.
Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who came off the bench against the Germans, was one of the new faces in England’s starting line-up, while Spurs star Dele Alli was introduced eight minutes from time.
On 33 minutes, Barkley tried his luck with a scissors kick and was close to scoring four minutes later with a shot from 20 yards.
Three minutes out of intermission, the 22-year-old could have been credited with a helper but Adam Lallana saw his effort go wide.
The spectators paid a tribute to Dutch legend Johan Cruyff in the 14th minute.
