Siasia Reveals Mikel Will Not Train With Squad In USA As Porto Midfielder Arrives In Lagos
Published: June 18, 2016
Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia has moved quickly to dismiss claims in the local media that Porto’s Mikel Agu has been included in a so-called provisional 60-man roster for the 2016 Olympic Games and will train with the squad in the USA.
Mikel trained with the Nigeria U23s after the end of the season in May for three days, and was decamped before the squad left for the Suwon Invitational Tournament in South Korea.
It now appears the defensive midfielder is attempting to gatecrash his way into the squad, as he arrived Lagos from Portugal on Saturday night and plans to take the first flight to Abuja on Sunday morning to link up with the team.
Siasia was asked if Mikel Agu will train with the Nigeria U23s in Atlanta and he replied : “No, he is not training with the team in the United States. ”
To buttress the point made by Siasia, majority of the players expected for the get-together in the United States all applied for visas this past Thursday, with the exception of Odion Ighalo, Chelsea’s Obi Mikel and Alex Iwobi who are in the possession of passports of European nations and don’t require visas for a short stay in the USA.
