Ahmed Musa Joins Chelsea Star Mikel As Most Expensive Nigerian Player Signed
Published: July 08, 2016
New Leicester City signing Ahmed Musa has equaled the record transfer fee paid by a foreign club for a Nigerian player following his move to the Premier League champs.
When Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2006, the Blues paid Manchester United and Lyn Oslo £16 million to sign the defensive midfielder, with the English team compensated £12 million.
For the past ten years, no Nigerian player has cost that amount in transfer fees until Musa completed his move to the Foxes on Friday.
The BBC has confirmed that CSKA Moscow will pocket £16 million from the sale of the striker to Leicester City.
Former Super Eagles midfielder Austin Okocha was the most expensive Nigerian player when he joined PSG from Fenerbahce in 1998 for a fee of $17 million, and that record stood for eight years until it was broken by Mikel.
