Numbers Speak For Themselves : Akpeyi Comes To The Rescue Of Super Eagles Coach
Published: September 15, 2016
Chippa United glovesman Daniel Akpeyi is one of the best goalkeepers in South Africa in the new season, statistically speaking.
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has been left scratching his head over the poor form of Wolves star Carl Ikeme, so much so that he is praying that Vincent Enyeama reverses his decision to retire from the national team after a dispute with ex-manager Oliseh.
Akpeyi, who was left out of the squad to face Tanzania in September, could become the rejected stone, turned corner stone, following a string of fine performances for Chippa United since his return from the Olympic Games.
While Ikeme has conceded nine goals in seven league appearances so far this season, including four last weekend, Akpeyi has not conceded in both games he has featured in , against two of the traditional teams in South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United.
Rohr’s other option is to consider either Ikechukwu Ezenwa or Emmanuel Daniel but the two home-based goalkeepers can be rightly called rookies on the international stage.
