Liverpool Loanee Taiwo Awoniyi : Why They Call Me The New Rashidi Yekini
Published: August 23, 2017
Nigeria U23 international Taiwo Awoniyi has explained why he has been nicknamed the 'New Rashidi Yekini' back in his homeland.
According to the Liverpool loanee, he plundered goals aplenty during his days with the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles and that's the reason he has been compared with the legendary Yekini, Nigeria's all-time top scorer.
''Yekini was a big, big player for Nigeria with many goals and to this day he’s still revered and remembered. There’s a special remembrance day in Nigeria,'' Awoniyi told foarsite.com.
''I’ve played for the U17’s and U20’s and scored goals in almost every game. If you do that, you’ll be compared to Yekini.
''But when they asked me about that in Nigeria I always told them I’m privileged. But my name is Taiwo and that’s me.''
Awoniyi has impressed in his first two matches for Belgian First Division A club Royal Excel Mouscron, having netted on his debut and bagging an assist in the last round of matches.
