Nigeria Vs Cameroon: Old Guard Moses, Mikel, Ighalo, Balogun Delivered In Uyo
Published: September 03, 2017
As prefix and suffix to every national team engagement, there is always a clamour across several quarters, with different interest groups campaigning for different set of players inclusion or otherwise.
At the team's last engagement, the Super Eagles fielded their youngest starting eleven yet, with the average age of the team confirmed as 23 years by Coach Gernot Rohr.
Entrusted with the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians, the young guns faltered, running themselves to the ground with little end product, and conceding two goals to a South Africa team believed to be inferior.
With the World Cup qualification on the table and the old guard of John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo and Leon Balogun fit and available for selection, the coach stuck with the old guns, creating a blend of the old and the new to devastating effect.
In repaying the coach's faith, Ighalo set the ball rolling after leaving the Cameroonian defense for dead, Mikel made it two from a corner and Moses sealed all three points with a well taken goal after a pass from Moses Simon.
Kelechi Iheanacho, largely believed to be the future of this team put the game to bed with the fourth goal, but on this day, the old guard stood up to be counted and reminded Nigerians of their enduring quality.
