Moses Simon On Target As Nigeria Are Held By Cameroon In WCQ
Published: September 04, 2017
A Vincent Aboubacar penalty 15 minutes from time saved Cameroon's blushes as they came from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw against Nigeria.
The match was a pulsating affair for the 2018 FIFA World qualification at the Stade Omnisports Ahmadou Ahidjo on Monday.
Despite the draw, Nigeria are on course for a sixth World Cup appearance as they top Group B with 10 points from four games.
Nigeria had taken the lead in the 30th minute, through winger Moses Simon and looked set to upset the hosts.
But Cameroon missed a host of opportunities, and could have been punished in the end as the bumper home crowd pushed the hosts for a last gasp winner which, however, could not come.
Victor Moses, Moses Simon, John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo were terrorising the Indomitable Lions defence with their technical superiority and slick movement.
Andre Frank Zambo tested Super Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu with a shot after a good run, and Benjamin Moukanjo shot over from just inside the box after another slick move.
Adolphe Teikue had to use his legs to block a goal bound shot as the marauding Nigerians curved open the Cameroonian defence.
Nigeria were not about to take their foot off the pedal as they continued to see more of the ball, creating the clearer chances.
They were soon in the lead as Simon was on-hand to beat Fabrice Ondoa from close range after Ighalo made a good run from the right.
Substitute Aboubacar however saved the day for Cameroon as he held his nerve to convert from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to go.
