Super Eagles Captain Named Best Goalkeeper At WAFU Cup Of Nations
Published: September 25, 2017
The final awards ceremony at the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations saw Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Ezenwa awarded the Golden Gloves accolade for the best keeper of the tournament despite conceding four goals in the final.
The FC Ifeanyi Ubah netminder posted four consecutive shutouts leading up to Sunday's final against Ghana at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Ezenwa did not concede in the preliminary round against Sierra Leone, two group matches against Mali and Ghana, and the semifinal showdown versus Benin Republic.
In Sunday's showpiece against Ghana, the Super Eagles captain did not concede until the 44th minute, after the substitution of hardworking defender Olamilekan Adeleye, who suffered an injury.
After that the Nigerian defense seemed to fall apart and Ghana scored three more goals before Super Eagles number 10 Rabiu Ali netted a consolation strike in stoppage time to bring the score to 4-1.
