Chelsea Confirm Tammy Abraham Has Chosen England Ahead Of Nigeria
Published: November 07, 2017
Chelsea have confirmed that Tammy Abraham has chosen to play for his country of birth, England, despite being approached by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Having netted five goals for Swansea City, where he is on loan until the end of the season, manager Gareth Southgate handed Abraham a maiden call-up to the Three Lions ahead of pre-World Cup friendlies against Germany and Brazil.
Reviewing their players that have reported for international duty with their respective national teams, Chelsea wrote on their official website: ''Abraham who, along with Loftus-Cheek, has been called up to the senior squad for the first time, has pledged his long-term future to England following recent reports which indicated Nigeria were hopeful of persuading him to switch allegiance.''
Born in Camberwell, London twenty years ago, Abraham can represent the Super Eagles because his dad has ancestral ties to Nigeria.
He was a regular for the England U19 squad before he was quickly promoted to the U21s without making a single appearance for the U20s, thus missing out on representing the Young Lions at the 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup despite helping England qualify for the tournament in South Korea.
Abraham will become only the second player of Nigerian descent to represent England at the World Cup if he's selected for the 2018 tournament in Russia, and will follow in the footsteps of Everton's Ross Barkley.
