The 31-year-old has been brilliant for Chippa United this term after recovering from injury, posting five shutouts in nine matches across all competitions.
Akpeyi was in between the pipes when Nigeria beat Algeria 3-1 last November and had been tipped to return to the starting line-up on Friday due to the inactivity of Ikechukwu Ezenwa.
