2018 World Cup Draw Countdown: Nigeria 0 South America 5
Published: November 28, 2017
As the Super Eagles prepare to know their World cup foes by the time the draws are made on Friday, 1st December, allnigeriasoccer.com reviews Nigeria's previous performances against South American opponents at the mundial.
Argentina and Paraguay remain the only South American teams to have squared off against Nigeria in all the five clashes they have recorded so far at the football fiesta, the former having featured against the Super Eagles a record four times.
Intrestingly, Nigeria have been bested in all five of those occasions dating back from their 1994 debut to the last edition in 2014.
1994: In the 1994 edition in USA, Claudio Caniggia's double ensured the Super Eagles tasted their first ever World cup defeat against the Albiceleste in a 2-1 loss.
1998: Come France '98, Nigeria would also kiss the dust against another South American outfit in the shape of Paraguay, with goals from Rafael Ayala, Angel Benitez and José Cardozo edging them in the 3-1 affair.
2002: The Korea/Japan 2002 saw another agonising loss to Argentina, a Gabriel Batistuta's effort proved just enough for the South Americans to claim their second victory against the African nation.
2010: They were not done though as the 2010 edition equally saw Nigeria pitted against Argentina in South Africa. And it turned out to be the same old story, Gabriel Heinze the architect of the downfall here with the sole goal in a 1-0 encounter.
2014: The last meeting in Brazil three years ago was a goal-laden one, Lionel Messi and Ahmed Musa notching braces for themselves before Marcos Rojo struck the one which decided the game in the eventual 3-2 turnout.
