Aaron Samuel 5-A-Side Tournament Kicks Off In Grand Style
Published: December 13, 2017
The second edition of the Aaron Samuel 5-a-side football tournament kicked off in grand style at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, and witnessed the presence of several amateur football teams from within Rivers and Bayelsa states.
The tournament is sponsored by Nigeria international Aaron Samuel, as away of giving back to the city where he grew up.
But being the sponsor of the competition meant nothing as Samuel’s own 5-a-side team – Aaron FC – were beaten 3-2 by D/Line on the opening day of proceedings, with the Super Eagles star not being able to rescue his side from defeat.
The special guest on the opening day was the Sports Commissioner in Rivers State, Hon. Boma Iyayi, who represented the Rivers State government.
Speaking before the tournament kicked off, Iyayi thanked Samuel for returning to his roots, while also expressing his delight at the essence of the competition.
“I am impressed with Aaron,” said Iyayi. “He is giving back to the youths, which isn’t something everybody will remember to do.
“Aaron has returned to his roots and as a fan of his, I must say that I am impressed.”
Speaking after the day’s events, Samuel said: “I thank the Rivers State Government and the Sports Commissioner for appearing at the event.
“It has really encouraged me, and I hope to continue in this stead in the future.”
The tournament continues on Thursday, December 14.
