Leicester 1 Man City 1 (aet, 3-4 pens) : Nmecha & Dele-Bashiru Debut; Tosin Stars; Iheanacho Struggles
Published: December 19, 2017
Manchester City went through to the next round of the League Cup on penalties after beating Leicester City 4-3 on penalties at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.
Kelechi Iheanacho made a rare start for the Foxes, Man City teenagers Lukas Nmecha and Tom Dele-Bashiru were named on the bench while Tosin Adarabioyo returned to the starting line-up for the Cup tie after starring in the shoot out victory over Wolves in the competition last time out.
Bernado Silva put the Citizens in front following a swift counter after just 26 minutes, the Portuguese getting onto the end of a pin point pass from Ilkay Gundogan to stab home.
Iheanacho lashed over after Ben Chilwell had pressured Claudio Bravo into coughing up possession with four minutes left of the first period with Leicester desperately chasing an equaliser.
Harry Maguire powered a stunning shot goal wards which was well blocked four minutes past the hour mark as Manchester City survived a huge scare.
Riyad Mahrez nearly grabbed the equalizer eight minutes from time after ghosting past Oleksander Zinchenko but Bravo was quick to beat away his low shot as Claude Puel's side continued to throw everything at their opponents.
The unscripted leveller for Leicester City would arrive in the added time of the game after Kyle Walker had upended Demarai Gray in the box, with Vardy stepping up to rifle in from the spot and send the game into extra time.
Both sides would nullify each other throughout the 30 minutes that ensued before misses from Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy in the penalty shoot out ensured the Citizens scrapped through to the semifinals.
Iheanacho who was booked in the 31st minute trudged off for Vardy 12 minutes after the restart of full time while Mmecha and Dele-Bashiru came on for their senior team debuts in the 88th and 90th minutes respectively,
with the former converting his spot kick in the shoot out.
Tosin Adarabioyo was in action for the entirety of the game.
