Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1: Tosin & Olosunde Not Selected; Solanke Features Off Bench
Published: March 10, 2018
Manchester United continued their impressive run of form with a 2-1 win over rivals, Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a first half masterclass from Marcus Rashford.
Manchester United teenage sensation, Tosin Kehinde starred for the team's U23s in their 2-1 win in the PL2 yesterday against the youth side of Liverpool and so was not involved here as also his compatriot, Matthew Olosunde who was absent yesterday.
Dominic Solanke was named among the substitutes for the visitors.
Both sides played out goalless stalemates in their last two meetings but it didn't take long for the deadlock to be broken here, Marcus Rashford running onto a clever flick by strike partner, Romelu Lukaku before cutting past Alex-Arnold to finish smartly beyond Loris Karius in the 14th minute.
Shortly after Virgil Van Dijk has failed to direct his header goalwards at the near post, Rashford struck again, Juan Mata blocked off in the Liverpool area but with the ball kindly rolling over to the 20-year old, he guided another terrific finish in via a deflection to make it 2-0.
Eric Bailey's own goal halved the deficit six minutes after the hour mark, with the defender producing a stunning back heel finish from a Sadio Mane's low cross to beat De Gea and hand Liverpool a lifeline.
End to end action in the closing stages lit up the encounter, with Karius required to run 40 yards off his line to deny Alexis Sanchez and Mohammed Salah lifting over with the last kick of the game.
