Iwobi Will Be Gutted As Childhood Pal Is Ruled Out Of England-Nigeria Friendly
Published: May 08, 2018
One of the most promising talents in England, Liverpool's Joe Gomez, will play no part for the Three Lions when they face Nigeria in a glamour friendly at the National Stadium in London on June 2.
UEFA Champions League finalists Liverpool have reported on their official webpage that Gomez has undergone an operation on an ankle injury and will not be available for selection in the remaining two fixtures of the 2017-18 campaign, or the World Cup finals with England.
Gomez is friends with Nigeria international Alex Iwobi, both were playing for Blackheath District before they joined Charlton Athletic and Arsenal on a permanent basis and they still play football together over the summer.
There had been a possibility of the right-back facing winger Iwobi in an individual battle in the pre-World Cup friendly at Wembley.
In Liverpool's last two matches in the Premier League with West Brom and Stoke City, Gomez, who has three caps for England's senior team, played through the pain barrier.
Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is listed as out for now and unlikely to feature for the Super Eagles against Gareth Southgate's side.
