West Ham's Argentina Star Ruled Out Of World Cup After ACL Injury In Training
Published: June 08, 2018
West Ham's Argentina attacking midfielder Manuel Lanzini will not help the South Americans in the upcoming World Cup after suffering a training ground injury in Barcelona on Friday, the Argentina Football Association has announced.
The Argentina Football Association tweeted : ''Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today's morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee."
The former River Plate and Fluminense man was named to Argentina's 23-man World Cup roster after an outstanding season for West Ham in which he scored five goals in 29 appearances in all competitions while providing nine assists.
The 25-year-old Lanzini debuted for the Argentinian national team in their 1-0 win over Brazil last June and has four appearances under his belt.
According to Article 44 of the Fifa regulations for the World Cup, manager Jorge Sampaoli can call up any player as replacement for the West Ham star whether or not he was included in the provisional squad.
Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been ruled out of the World Cup finals as well due to a knee injury he suffered in training.
The Super Eagles will face Argentina in their final Group D fixture at the Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg on June 26.
