Chelsea Hero Drogba Reacts To Rojo's Game-Winner Against Nigeria
Published: June 28, 2018
Though he is an advocate of African football, consistently supporting the Nigeria team before their elimination from the 2018 World Cup, Chelsea hero Didier Drogba has praised Manchester United's Marcos Rojo for his fine goal that decided the outcome of the meeting between the two continental powerhouses on Tuesday evening.
With Argentina on the brink of elimination and four minutes left on the clock, the South Americans' match-winner came from the unlikeliest of sources, central defender Marcos Rojo, who finished like a number nine after a cross from Gabriel Mercado.
Speaking as an analyst on the BBC, Drogba said : ''Cool. To be in that position, I think he must have been practicing something like that in training, to have this cool finishing, always put the ball where it is coming from.
''The cross is coming from the left, put the ball back to the left.''
West Ham and Argentina defender Pablo Zabaleta added : ''This is the belief sometimes in the game. Central defenders probably lose the ball and just go back to their position but he was there.
''He thought that would be a chance, I will go into the box and wait for the corner, sometimes those decision in a huge moment like that makes the difference.''
Lionel Messi had opened the scoring in the 15th minute but Nigeria leveled through Victor Moses' well taken penalty kick five minutes into the second half.
