Elsewhere at Stamford Bridge, a treble from Eden Hazard and another strike from Willian gave Chelsea a 4-1 victory over Cardiff City; Sol Bamba with the only goal for the opponents.
Yet again, ex-Nigeria international, Victor Moses was missing from the match day squad for The Blues.
Over to the John Smith's stadium, Wilfried Zaha's solitary goal gave Crystal Palace a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.
Midfielder Philip Billing was on from start to finish for the Terriers here.
In another clash at St James Park, Arsenal bested Newcastle 2-1 courtesy of goals from Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka while Clark scored for the Magpies.
