Southampton's Afolabi Nets Winner, Olufunwa Impresses In 1-0 Win Against Man Utd U23s
Published: February 02, 2019
Nigerian striker Jonathan Afolabi grabbed a first-half winner as Southampton defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a Premier League 2 Division Two fixture at Leigh Sports Village Stadium on Friday night.
Defender Oludare Olufunwa, who is open to representing the Nigerian National Teams, started for the Saints in his new position as right back, teammate Nathan Tella came off the bench in injury time while United's Matthew Olosunde stayed on the bench for the entirety of the game.
Against the run of play, Afolabi received the ball with his back to goal, managed to turn before firing past the Red Devils goalkeeper from inside the box in the 31st minute.
Olufunwa, who started the season with Southampton's U18 side, has started and gone the distance in each of the last three games contested by the U23 team, a sign he's making good progress at the club.
Southampton U23s have conceded only once in the league since his elevation to the team which was against Middlesbrough on January 13.
After a slow start to the season, Jonathan Afolabi has started to prove his worth, scoring 3 goals in his last four appearances in the Premier League 2.
