Brazilian Super Kid Martinelli Fails To Equal Arsenal Record Held By Iwobi, 2 Others
Published: December 15, 2019
Brazilian super kid Gabriel Martinelli failed to equal an Arsenal record held by Alex Iwobi and two former Gunners players after Manchester City defeated the North London club 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Sky Sports highlighted before the game that Martinelli could become the fourth player to score in first two English Premier League starts for the club after Ian Wright, Davor Suker and Alex Iwobi.
The Gunners number 35, scorer of eight goals in all competitions this season, fired blanks despite spending 90 minutes on the pitch.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright was the sole holder of the record for scoring in back-to-back Premier League starts until it was equaled by Croatia legend Davor Suker during the 1999-2000 season.
In the inaugural season of the Premier League (1992-93), Wright netted in consecutive matches against Liverpool and Oldham Athletic, while Suker got on the scoresheet against Aston Villa and West Ham.
Iwobi netted on his first Premier League start against Everton on March 19, 2016 and bagged his second goal in the top-flight two weeks later vs Watford.
The Nigeria international scored nine more goals in the Premier League before ending his association with Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
