Almeria striker Sadiq finds the net against LaLiga 2 table-toppers Espanyol
Published: April 19, 2021
Umar Sadiq was on target as Almeria were held to a 1-1 draw by LaLiga 2 table-toppers Espanyol at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos on Monday night.
Sadiq's form over the last eight months saw him invited to last month's Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho but the lanky striker was prevented from traveling due to coronavirus concerns.
Chances were few and far between in the first half, leaving both teams deadlocked at the interval.
Four minutes after the restart, Sadiq opened the scoring with a cross-shot; the goal was awarded after a VAR review.
Almeria's celebration did not last long as Dimata netted an equaliser in the 58th minute to earn a draw for the visitors.
Sadiq's return of 17 goals and 17 assists - a goal involvement of 34 - last season was impressive, and he's close to bettering his personal record, having contributed to 31 goals (24 goals, 7 assists) this term.
Almeria's 1-1 draw with Espanyol puts them ten points behind the Barcelona-based side in the race for promotion to the Spanish top-flight.
