Super Eagles star on target for Salernitana in loss to Aston Villa
Published: August 08, 2021
Nigeria national teamer Joel Obi got on the scoresheet but his goal could not prevent Italian Serie A new boys Salernitana from losing 3-1 to Premier League club Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly at Villa Park on Sunday.
Last month, the former Inter Milan and Parma midfielder joined Salernitana on a one-year contract with the option of an extension.
Obi gave the visitors the lead after twenty minutes, nodding home a close-range header following a free-kick.
Goals from new signing Danny Ings and Anwar El Ghazi ensured that the Premier League side were 2-1 up at the interval.
Anglo-Austrian-Nigerian midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, 17, got valuable minutes under his belt when he came on to replace Ollie Watkins two minutes into the second half.
Former Manchester United star Ashley Young finished off a superb team move to put the game beyond the reach of Salernitana with nineteen minutes left on the clock.
Obi was in action for 72 minutes before making way for French defender Sanasi Sy.
The Super Eagles star has also worn the colours of Torino, Chievo and Alanyaspor in the past.
