Onyeka's jersey number revealed ahead of Brentford's first-ever Premier League game vs Arsenal
Published: August 09, 2021
Through their official website, Brentford have announced their squad numbers for the 2021-2022 season ahead of their first-ever Premier League game at home to Arsenal on Friday, August 13.
Summer arrival from FC Midtjylland in Denmark, Frank Onyeka was allocated a provisional squad number of 39 when he made his unofficial debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford on July 28.
When the Super Eagles star opened his account for The Bees in Saturday's 2-1 win over Valencia, he was wearing the number 15 on the back of his jersey.
Brentford have confirmed that Onyeka has been assigned the number 15 in his first season in England.
The jersey number was previously worn by Marcus Forss, Ryan Woods, Stuart Dallas, James Wilson, David Hunt, Damian Scannell and Matthew Heywood.
The number 15 is famous in Onyeka's homeland, Nigeria; it was worn by former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh during his spell with Cologne, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax Amsterdam.
Oliseh also played with the shirt number for the Olympic National Team and Super Eagles for several years.
Onyeka owes his football success to Sunday Oliseh's elder brother, Churchill, who plucked the then-central defender from obscurity to join FC Ebedei before he was scouted by partner club FC Midtjylland.
