Nigeria-eligible duo axed from Chelsea squad to face Villarreal in UEFA Super Cup
Published: August 10, 2021
It is looking likely that no Nigeria-eligible player will be on parade at Windsor Park in Belfast in the 46th edition of the UEFA Super Cup, contested by the holders of the two biggest European club competitions.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has taken twenty-four players to the Northern Irish capital but Ike Ugbo and Faustino Anjorin have not been included in the group.
Ugbo not making the roster did not come as a surprise as he wasn't registered for the competition and has been linked with a permanent departure from Chelsea this month.
On the other hand, Anjorin had been in contention to travel to Belfast as he was named in Chelsea's provisional squad list and it is confirmed that he trained with the first team on Monday, August 9.
Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze is still recovering from a muscle injury that required surgery and unlikely to be named in Villarreal 's squad list versus Chelsea, having missed all the pre-season matches played by the Europa League winners.
No Nigeria-eligible player has featured in the UEFA Super Cup since 2013 when John Obi Mikel played the last 33 minutes of Chelsea's loss on penalties to Bayern Munich at the Eden Arena, Prague.
The Super Cup between Chelsea and Villarreal starts at 2000 hours Nigerian time on Wednesday night.
