17-year-old center-half of Nigerian descent makes competitive debut for Charlton Athletic
Published: August 11, 2021
Deji Elerewe, 17, made his senior debut for Charlton Athletic as they suffered a 1-0 loss to AFC Wimbledon in the first round of the Carabao Cup at The Valley on Tuesday night.
It was inevitable that the Anglo-Nigerian center-half was going to make his competitive debut for the Addicks this term as he trained with the first team throughout pre-season and was involved in most of their preparatory games.
Wearing the number 50 on the back of his jersey, Elerewe was handed a start by manager Nigel Adkins and gave a good account of himself in 90 minutes of action.
Paul Osew netted the game-winning goal in the 26th minute, finishing at the back post a cross from Lawrence.
Watford loanee Dapo Mebude sparkled on his starting debut for AFC Wimbledon and received a standing ovation from the Dons supporters when he got replaced in the 63rd minute.
Predominantly a central defender and standing at 6ft 3in, Elerewe's
commanding presence at the heart of defence
has seen him likened to Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk due to his
similar playing style.
Elerewe is also comfortable playing in midfield and as a fullback.
