Sierra Leone Football Association target beats Abu, 6 others to Chelsea Goal of the Month
Published: September 10, 2021
Young Anglo-German-Nigerian defender Derrick Abu has missed out on Chelsea's Goal of the Month award for August 2021.
European champions Chelsea have announced their Goal of the Month winner and the accolade went to Trevoh Chalobah for his stunning strike on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace.
Potential opponents for the Super Eagles in the 2021 Africa Cup of
Nations round of sixteen, Sierra Leone are attempting to persuade
Chalobah to switch his allegiance from England
to his country of birth ahead of the tournament in Cameroon.
Born in Freetown, he has represented England at U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels.
Abu had been in the frame for the Goal of the Month prize for his first goal for Chelsea U18s in a 7-2 rout of Tottenham Hotspur in an U18 Premier League fixture.
Three minutes after coming off the bench, the 17-year-old's brilliant
shot from outside the box, all the way through the crowd, ended up in
the back of the net.
Abu's strike didn't finish in the top three, with Kai Havertz's looping header at Liverpool and Marcos Alonso's free-kick opener vs Palace coming second and third respectively.
Other nominees were Romelu Lukaku, Hakim
Ziyech, Pernille Harder and Harvey Vale.
