Official : Anglo-Nigerian striker named in Man Utd's Premier League squad
Published: September 10, 2021
Manchester United have submitted their Premier League squad following the close of the summer transfer window.
A player of Nigerian descent in Shola Shoretire has been included in the squad list and has been classed as an U21 player.
Having spent seven years at Manchester United, the England U19 international has been registered as a homegrown player.
For the sake of clarity, a homegrown player means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can supplement the squad with any number of under-21 players, whatever their country of birth. For this season, these are players who were born on or after 1 January 2000.
Therefore, Netherlands youth international of Nigerian descent Dillon Hoogewerf, 18, and first year scholarĀ Maximilano Oyedele are eligible to represent the Red Devils in the Premier League.
Of the three aforementioned Nigeria-eligible players, only Shoretire has tasted action in the English top-flight.
The 17-year-old striker, who has been assigned the number 47 shirt, made his Premier League debut against Newcastle United in February 2021, before playing his second game versus Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the 2020-2021 campaign.
