Ex-Sheffield United GK expects Arsenal to sign new rival for Okonkwo if Leno is sold
Published: September 24, 2021
Former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny expects Arsenal to sign a new goalkeeper next year if German shot-stopper Bernd Leno moves on to pastures new as from the January transfer window.
The retired Republic of Ireland international feels that young goalkeepers Arthur Okonkwo and Karl Hein are not experienced enough to provide cover for Aaron Ramsdale.
Leno appears to have lost his spot in Arsenal's starting line-up, with Ramsdale preferred to him in the last two Premier League matches.
Classed as a first teamer on paper, Okonkwo has yet to make his competitive debut for the Gunners in the new season and his only squad involvement was as a reserve option against Manchester City.
The England underage international of Nigerian descent featured for the first team in pre-season matches against Hibernian and Glasgow Rangers.
Speaking to Caughtoffside, Kenny explained : "I’m sure this was the plan all along, to move Leno on. They won’t just leave it at that.
"I’d be surprised if they leave Ramsdale as the only senior keeper without replacing Leno."
Okonkwo has played just once for the Arsenal teams in 2021-2022, against Manchester United in the Premier League 2 about two weeks ago.
