Speedy winger Tella gets good ratings despite Southampton's loss to Chelsea
Published: October 03, 2021
Southampton are one of four teams still without a win after seven matches in the English Premier League following their 3-1 loss to European champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
It was only 1-0 at the end of the first half with Trevoh Chalobah's header giving the Blues the lead in the ninth minute but Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner saw goals disallowed by VAR, the first for offside and second for a foul on Cesar Azpilicueta by Kyle Walker-Peters.
In the second half, Werner tapped in from close range to make it 2-1 before Ben Chilwell's stunning strike sealed the win.
Making his first start of the season, pacey Anglo-Nigerian winger Nathan Tella was one of the positives for Southampton in their loss to Chelsea, going by the ratings given to the players by the English press.
The Super Eagles target was replaced by Moussa Djenepo with seventeen minutes remaining after picking up a knock.
The Daily Mail awarded Tella six out of ten and wrote on him : "A couple of early bursts forward using his blistering pace, but both came to nothing. Injured in the 66th minute but played on after treatment. Replaced by Moussa Djenepo on 73 min."
Tella earned a 7.5/10 from Hampshire Live who highlighted that he had a good second half.
"Tella did one thing that his colleagues do not do enough, running at defenders. It got the fans off their seats but it didn't quite create enough chances. His second half was far strong and he was unlucky not to see a clear opening."
Sky Sports rated Tella 6 for his performance while 90min's verdict was an average display by the youngster with a 5/10 rating but noted that he was the Southampton player more likely to create a goal.
