Nwakali's proposed switch fails to beat the deadline; Barnsley also tried to sign ex-Gunner
Published: February 01, 2022
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Kelechi Nwakali's proposed deadline day move to Burgos CF did not materialize after all.
The former Arsenal midfielder had agreed terms with Burgos CF in the final hour leading up to the close of the winter transfer market but the transfer collapsed because the documents were not signed in time before the window closed for business, just as was envisaged when allnigeriasoccer.com broke the news last night.
Nwakali comes off contract with SD Huesca at the end of June and has no intention of extending his stay so has to see out the last five months of his contract.
Apart from Burgos CF, several teams in Spain and England explored the possibility of signing Nwakali last month but SD Huesca were only willing to do business with Burgos CF.
Championship outfit Barnsley were interested in the services of the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner but nothing came out of it, and it cannot be ruled out that they will pursue a deal for the Nigeria international in the summer when he would have become a free agent.
Nwakali made his senior and competitive debuts for the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
