Why Southampton should be targeting Super Eagles star to strengthen the attack
Published: June 08, 2022
The English Premier League is the most competitive in the world and the financial strength of the lower placed clubs makes it even more difficult to win the league.
As the upcoming summer transfer window draws closer, all teams in the world are looking to upgrade their various squads which brings allnigeriasoccer.com to why Southampton should be targeting Nigerian hitman Paul Onuachu.
Chelsea loanee Armando Broja was a key forward for Southampton last season, but he has already returned to his parent club and Southampton is left short up front.
Ralph Hasenhuttl remains interested in having Broja again next season, but it would be tough as Chelsea may want to integrate such an effective front man into the team next season as Lukaku's future remains uncertain.
If Broja isn't brought back to the St Mary's, then a successor must be found unless Southampton risk going further down the table from their 15th position due to a lack of goals.
Paul Onuachu is a Genk striker who is quite clinical by the word of it. The 28-year-old hitman scored 21 goals in 35 Jupiler Pro League appearances, he also laid a further 3 assists bringing his total to 24 goal contributions.
Southampton play a flat 4-4-2 with a midfield pivot sitting at the base of midfield. A target man up front with a support striker/winger who drops into midfield to compress space.
Onuachu would be perfect as the top frontier with his top-notch ability to hold up the ball and bring midfielders into the play at a good level.
His aerial prowess and clinical finishing stand him in good stead for performing excellently in the Premier League.
For a valuation of about 17 million Euros according to Transfermarkt, Onuachu represents a low risk, high reward kind of investment if Southampton decides to sign him.
He is also vastly experienced with many seasons under his belt already which would make his adaptation to the EPL quite quick.
