Official : Promising Nigerian defender ends 12-year association with Southampton
Published: June 11, 2022
Southampton have submitted their released list to the Premier League following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season.
The Saints have released seven players including promising Nigerian central defender Oludare Olufunwa.
The 20-year-old joined the Southampton Academy in 2010 and will end his 12-year association with the Saints upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2022.
Though Olufunwa did not make his first team debut for Southampton, he was often called up to train with the first team and represented the senior squad in non-competitive matches during pre-season, under the watchful eye of manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.
He made forty one appearances combined in the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2, scoring two goals, and also featured in the Papa John's Trophy and FA Youth Cup.
Born in Southampton to a Nigerian father and English mom, Olufunwa is open to representing the Nigerian national teams.
Regarding the retained list, Kazeem Olaigbe, Zuriel Otseh-Taiwo and Nathan Tella have been kept on by Southampton ahead of the start of pre-season training.
