Would Calvin Bassey be an adequate replacement for Man Utd-bound Lisandro Martinez?
Published: July 16, 2022
With the transfer window in full flow, Nigerian left-back Calvin Bassey has been linked with a move to Eredivisie heavyweights Ajax as a replacement for Argentine left-back Lisandro Martinez who is close to making a move to Manchester United in a deal reportedly worth 48 million pounds.
However, will the Rangers star be an adequate replacement for Martinez? Allnigeriasoccer.com compares their abilities to arrive at a verdict.

Lisandro Martinez's style of play
Lisandro Martinez is one of the best technical defenders in Europe's top five leagues. His passing range and quality, turning radius and tackling abilities make him a dream signing for any team that wants to play a Juego De Posición set-up.
With Erik Ten Hag coming to Manchester United, it makes sense that Martinez would be one of his first set of signings.
Whilst primarily being a centre-back, Martinez is quite capable of playing as a defensive midfielder as well as a left-back. He can invert properly and does so without a drop-off in quality.
Calvin Bassey's style of play
The Gers defender is a great defender who is proving himself with several high-profile performances. Bassey is good on the ball, and versatile enough to play left-back, centre-back and left wing-back to a very high standard.
He is also incredibly strong and taller than Martinez at 6ft.
While Bassey is more physically intimidating than Martinez, he is not on the same level technique-wise as the Argentine.
If Bassey eventually replaces Martinez, Ajax would have to sacrifice some technical proficiency but would gain more athleticism and physicality in the process.
All in all, the Nigerian is a good replacement for Martinez as he would increase his technical efficiency in a club that is centred around high technical capabilities on the ball.
