Algarve Cup : Tosin unable to prevent Fulham from shipping five goals to Benfica
Published: July 18, 2022Premier League newsboys Fulham suffered a huge 5-1 defeat at the hands of Portuguese giants SL Benfica in their pre-season friendly on Sunday at the Estadio Algarve.
The Cottagers claimed the Algarve Cup runner-up prize for their efforts after seeing off OGC Nice 2-0 to advance to the final.
The match comes as the second test of Fulham's pre-season tour in Portugal and Nigeria-eligible defender Tosin Adarabioyo made the starting line-up.
The towering defender was unable to help his club from shipping five goals as Benfica ran riot with Rafa Silva, Goncalo Ramos, Roman Yaremchuk and Henrique Araujo getting on the score-sheet for the Portuguese side.
Having initially gone 4-0 down, Aleksandar Mitrovic was able to pull a goal back for the Londoners in the 61st minute but Benfica quickly responded with a fifth goal from Henrique Araujo in the 64th minute.
Idris Odutayo was an unused substitute and the defender watched on as his team got torn apart by a rampant Benfica.
Fulham triggered a one-year extension in Odutayo's contract which automatically means he is now under contract until June 30, 2023.
The promising midfielder and Anglo-Bulgarian-Nigerian winger Sylvester Jasper started the win against OGC Nice on Saturday.
