Confirmed : Released Tottenham Hotspur Nigerian goalkeeper joins Portsmouth
Published: July 19, 2022Through their official website, EFL League One club Portsmouth have announced the signing of 2021 Super Eagles invitee Joshua Oluwayemi.
Oluwayemi has joined Pompey as a free agent following his release by Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season, after deciding not to extend his stay at the north London club.
The 21-year-old has inked a one-year contract with Portsmouth, with a club option for the 2023-2024 season.
He has been offered a contract by Portsmouth after his impressive performance while training with the club this summer, and played the second half of the friendly against Havant & Waterlooville.
Oluwayemi was handed his first minutes in men's football during a loan spell at Maidenhead United in the 2020-2021 season.
Speaking on the signing of Oluwayemi, manager Danny Cowley stated : "Josh had a great footballing education with Tottenham and has amazing athleticism.
"He’s an incredible shot-stopper and is also good with his feet, so we’re delighted to bring him to the club.
"We’ve got Josh Griffiths and Toby Steward, and he’s another young player who our goalkeeping coach Joe Prodomo is looking forward to working with and helping to develop.
"There is plenty of potential and he is exactly the sort of promising player that our club is looking to sign."
Joshua's younger brother Tobi Oluwayemi, who is also a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy and a goalkeeper too, currently plays for Glasgow Celtic's youth team and represents the Young Lions at international level.
