Confirmed : Super Eagles striker handed debut by Peseiro joins Slovenian champions
Published: July 26, 2022Through a statement on their official website, Slovenian PrvaLiga champions NK Maribor have announced the signing of one-cap Nigeria international Ishaq Kayode Rafiu.
Ishaq, who is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the Nigerian Professional Football League, has ended his association with Rivers United by agreeing a three-year contract with NK Maribor.
The 2001-born winger was handed his Super Eagles debut by manager Jose Peseiro as the national team narrowly lost 2-1 to Mexico in an international friendly on May 29, 2022.
He was a key member of the Rivers United squad in the recently concluded season, scoring fourteen goals to help them win the NPFL title ad it has been suggested that he would have scored more if not for his commitments with the national team.
Commenting on his transfer to NK Maribor, Rafiu said : "I am very happy that we agreed and that I signed the contract.
"After playing in the top tier of the competition in Nigeria and after winning the championship, I had quite a few offers from clubs from Europe, I decided to move to Maribor, because I believe that the best Slovenian club is currently the most suitable choice for me as the next step on the development path.
"As a multiple national champion and a long-term participant in European competitions, Maribor makes it possible for a football player to do what he wants.
"I am looking forward to a new challenge in my career, I want to contribute my share on the field and I can't wait to meet my teammates, the professional staff and join the training sessions.
"I got a lot of information about the club, also heard about the great support of the fans. I believe that together we will bring them many reasons for satisfaction, with new victories and winning trophies."
NK Maribor revealed that they are still waiting for Ishaq's arrival to complete the paperwork for his transfer from Rivers United.
