'Goal return is acceptable but could be greater' - Rangers legend likens Dessers to Chelsea striker
Published: April 26, 2024
Rangers' record goalscorer Ally McCoist has made an interesting comparison between Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers and Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson.
Dessers has cut a divisive figure since his move to the Ibrox last summer, having demonstrated his ability to convert chances and miss the same as well.
The 29-year-old has once again been a subject of criticism in recent weeks as Rangers have moved from being in pole position to win the Scottish Premier League to being at the risk of missing out on the coveted trophy yet again.
Similarly, Jackson hasn't gained huge admirers since moving to Stamford Bridge last summer, having been found culpable of missing clear cut chances with his profligacy costing Chelsea on numerous occasions this term.
Speaking to Football Fancast via The Scottish Sun, McCoist drew a comparison between the two under-fire strikers which reiterates their shortcomings.
"I think the fans are kind of split. Silva's work rate is first class and Dessers scored two goals at the weekend [against Hearts]," he explained.
"His goal return has actually been good, but I think a lot of the fans perhaps feel that in many ways, he's maybe a wee bit like Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea whose goal return is acceptable but could be greater."
Despite the similarity between them, Dessers has more goals than the Senegal international, having scored 19 goals for Rangers, six more than the latter who has found the back of the net 13 times for the Blues.
The Nigeria international has helped the Light Blues advance to the final of the Scottish Cup courtesy of his brace against Hearts last weekend and will be hoping to help them beat Celtic to the trophy,as well as the Scottish Premier League.
